Early professional career
Smith turned pro in 1981. After a loss in his debut, he upset several prospects and built momentum with nine straight knockouts. In 1984 he traveled to the UK and stopped the unbeaten Frank Bruno (21–0). Later that year he challenged Larry Holmes for the IBF title but lost via 12th-round stoppage due to a cut.
In 1985 he fought on Don King undercards, beating contenders like José Ribalta but losing decisions to Tony Tubbs and Tim Witherspoon. In 1986 he stopped Mike Weaver in one round and outpointed Jesse Ferguson and David Bey.
WBA heavyweight champion
In December 1986, Smith was drafted in to replace Tubbs against WBA champion Tim Witherspoon. In a major upset, Smith dropped Witherspoon three times in the first round and scored a knockout to claim the WBA title.
As part of the heavyweight unification series, he defended the belt against WBC champion Mike Tyson on March 7, 1987. Tyson dominated and won a wide unanimous decision, unifying the titles.
Later career
Smith remained active through the late 1980s and 1990s, fighting notable opponents such as Adilson Rodrigues, Razor Ruddock, Greg Page, Michael Moorer, Lionel Butler, Axel Schulz, Brian Nielsen, Joe Bugner, and Larry Holmes. His performances were mixed, with some strong wins but increasing losses as his career progressed.
