Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, the undisputed super-middleweight champion, is set to defend his belts against John Ryder from Britain on May 6th in Mexico. The highly anticipated fight will take place at Akron Stadium in Guadalajara, marking Alvarez’s return to his home country after more than a decade.
Alvarez, who is 32 years old, recently defended his undisputed crown against Gennady Golovkin in a trilogy fight last September. Ryder, on the other hand, is the WBO mandatory challenger with a record of 32 wins and five losses from 37 fights. He lost his previous world-title shot to Callum Smith in 2019 but won the vacant WBO interim super-middleweight title in November after defeating Zach Parker.
Alvarez, a four-weight world champion, will be competing in his 63rd bout. He has an impressive record of 58 wins, two losses, and two draws. He added the IBF title to his WBA, WBC, and WBO belts after defeating Caleb Plant in November 2021.
After undergoing wrist surgery in late 2022, Alvarez expressed his happiness to be returning to the ring and fighting in Jalisco, his hometown. “And in John Ryder, I’m facing a very competitive fighter,” he said. Ryder, too, is thrilled to have the opportunity to fight Alvarez and hopes to fulfill his dream of becoming a world champion. “There’s no denying that Canelo is one of the greats, and I’ve got a lot of respect for what he’s achieved in the sport,” Ryder said.
