Gervonta “Tank” Davis, one of the most electrifying fighters in boxing today, will end a 14-month hiatus to defend his WBA lightweight title against unbeaten contender Frank Martin on June 15 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. This highly anticipated fight was announced via social media by the fighters and Premier Boxing Champions (PBC).
Main Event: Davis vs. Martin
This blockbuster bout will be the headline of a PBC card on Prime Video, available through Prime Video PPV and PPV.com. The co-feature will see David Benavidez move up from super middleweight to take on Oleksandr Gvozdyk for the vacant WBC interim light heavyweight belt.
Surprising Announcement Timing
Davis’s announcement came at an unexpected time, as he posted it on social media during the pay-per-view event headlined by Ryan Garcia’s stunning victory over Devin Haney. Sources involved in the event told Fight Freaks Unite that Davis announced the fight prematurely, with one insider stating, “Tank went rogue.”
Davis’ Triumphant Return
Davis, who hasn’t fought since his emphatic seventh-round knockout of Garcia last April at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, returns to the ring after serving 44 days in jail in his hometown of Baltimore for a 2020 hit-and-run case. Davis (29-0, 27 KOs), a 29-year-old southpaw, will be making his fifth title defense and headlining his seventh consecutive pay-per-view event.
Martin’s First World Title Shot
Frank Martin (18-0, 12 KOs), an undefeated southpaw from Indianapolis, will challenge Davis in his first world title fight. Martin, 29, shares trainer Derrick James with Garcia. He has not fought since a hard-fought decision win over Artem Harutyunyan last July, which he capped off with a 12th-round knockdown. Martin was previously in negotiations to fight Shakur Stevenson for the vacant WBC lightweight title but withdrew due to a financial dispute with his team.
Co-Feature: Benavidez vs. Gvozdyk
The co-featured bout between David Benavidez and Oleksandr Gvozdyk has also been eagerly awaited. Benavidez, the top contender in the super middleweight division and WBC interim titlist, had hoped for a showdown with undisputed champion Canelo Alvarez. However, with Alvarez opting to fight Jaime Munguia instead, Benavidez is moving up to 175 pounds to face Gvozdyk.
Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs), a 27-year-old from Phoenix, has headlined two pay-per-view events. In November, he delivered a dominant sixth-round knockout of unbeaten former middleweight and junior middleweight titlist Demetrius Andrade. Earlier, in March 2023, he secured a unanimous decision against former super middleweight titlist Caleb Plant.
Gvozdyk (20-1, 16 KOs), 37, hails from Ukraine and fights out of Oxnard, California. After being stopped by Artur Beterbiev in a 2019 unification bout, Gvozdyk retired for 3½ years. He has since returned to the ring, winning three straight fights, including two on Alvarez undercards.
