There has been a lot of talk about a rematch between the new WBA, IBF and IBO Heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jnr (33-1 22 KOs) and former champ Anthony Joshua (22-1 21 KOs) in recent weeks – the main talking point of focus being the territory and arena.
Andy Ruiz Jnr recently told TMZ Sports that he wants the rematch to be in Mexico or New York City again. He added that it was “his time” and “I’m the A side” whilst mentioning that it doesn’t matter where Joshua wants the fight. When asked directly about the fight taking place in the UK, the clip ends with Ruiz saying “not the UK”.

With Ruiz Jnr clearly enjoying his moment as the main man in the division, the reality of the rematch situation was further clarified by Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn. His initial comments on the rematch give us a better idea of why Ruiz Jnr believes his decision goes.
Speaking with Kugan Cassius of IFLTV, Hearn explained: -
"We had two approaches last week...Everybody knows the two main sites, New York, Cardiff. New York - November 29th, Cardiff - December 19th. We had a couple of approaches last week from two different countries, to stage the event. They were very interesting...financially they were very impressive but more than that, it was kind of groundbreaking and I wanted to explore them further. So I spoke to Anthony and the team - they want me to explore those further. There's meetings today, there's meetings tomorrow..."
When taking Ruiz Jnr's comments in context with Hearn's revelation of two new offers, it becomes clear that Ruiz believes these offers will sway Joshua's decision away from a UK rematch. Hearn also confirmed that these offers are the reason for the delay in announcing the much anticipated rematch. Hearn continued: -
"Will Andy Ruiz want to come the UK? Probably not... I don't think he wants to but unfortunately with his contractual obligations...Yeah, he knows, he signed up to certain things. He knows....we decide where that rematch will take place... Joshua will be the one who ultimately decides where that fight takes place."
The boxing world will eagerly await Anthony Joshua's decision with Hearn suggesting the location could be decided by this coming weekend.
