Hero vs. Villain
It was the “Manassa Mauler” vs. the “Orchid Man.” Over 80,000 spectators packed into Boyle’s Thirty Acres to see if the French war hero Carpentier could depose Dempsey, who was villainized by the press as a draft dodger. It became the first event to generate over $1,000,000 in ticket sales.

The Broken Hand
In Round 2, Carpentier landed a flush right hand that momentarily staggered Dempsey. However, Carpentier broke his thumb and hand on impact. Dempsey smiled, shook it off, and proceeded to dismantle the smaller man.
