Olympic gold medalist returns in Birmingham with world title ambitions, as Rodriguez Jr eyes career resurgence
Galal Yafai is set to return under the bright lights of Birmingham’s BP Pulse Live Arena on June 21, defending his WBC interim flyweight title against seasoned Mexican contender Francisco Rodriguez Jr.
The 2020 Olympic gold medallist from Tokyo hasn’t been in the ring since his dominant sixth-round stoppage of Sunny Edwards last November — a breakout performance that stamped Yafai (9-0, 7 KOs) as a legitimate force in the flyweight ranks. Now, the 31-year-old southpaw takes another step toward full world championship glory.
Standing in his way is Rodriguez Jr (38-6-1, 26 KOs), a grizzled veteran who once held unified WBO and IBF titles at strawweight. Trained by the renowned Eddy Reynoso, Rodriguez has campaigned as high as junior bantamweight in recent years, though he fell short against elite opposition like Kazuto Ioka and Junto Nakatani.
With WBC and WBA champion Kenshiro Teraji looming at the top of the division — and currently sitting at No. 10 on The Ring’s pound-for-pound list — the stakes are clear: the winner becomes the mandatory challenger to boxing’s flyweight kingpin.
Yafai vs. Rodriguez Jr serves as the co-main event on a stacked DAZN-streamed card, topped by an all-British battle between unbeaten Shabaz Masoud (14-0, 4 KOs) and Peter McGrail (11-1, 6 KOs) for the IBO junior-featherweight title.
Masoud has been riding high since dethroning Liam Davies six months ago, while McGrail rebounded from his lone career loss with a razor-close win over Rhys Edwards on the blockbuster Fury-Usyk 2 card in Riyadh.
In welterweight action, British champion Conah Walker (15-3-1, 6 KOs) will defend the Lonsdale strap against experienced challenger Liam Taylor (28-2-1, 14 KOs). Walker is coming off an 11th-round stoppage of Harry Scarff in January.
Also returning is Paris 2024 Olympian Pat Brown, who made a successful debut last month by halting Federico Grandone. Prospects Hamza Uddin, Ibraheem Sulaimaan and Aaron Bowen are also confirmed for undercard slots.
With a blend of rising stars, hungry contenders, and world-level intrigue, June 21 in Birmingham promises a night that could reshape the British boxing landscape — and perhaps the global flyweight picture too.
