Deontay Wilder is stepping back into the ring — and perhaps into the final act of his dramatic career.
The former WBC heavyweight champion will face Tyrrell Herndon in a 10-round bout on June 27 in Wichita, Kansas, promoters Nelson Lopez and Joshua Chasse of Global Combat Collective confirmed to ESPN. The fight marks Wilder’s first appearance since his crushing knockout loss to Zhilei Zhang last summer.
It’s been a turbulent stretch for the 38-year-old American, who also dropped a wide decision to Joseph Parker at the end of 2023. Now, with back-to-back losses and serious questions swirling around his future, Wilder (43-3-1, 42 KOs) aims to get back in the win column for the first time since his 2022 demolition of Robert Helenius.
Known as the “Bronze Bomber,” Wilder built his fearsome reputation on raw power — with 42 of his 43 victories coming by knockout. His unforgettable trilogy with Tyson Fury helped redefine the heavyweight era: a controversial draw in their first encounter, followed by two emphatic wins for Fury in the rematches. Those fights may have taken a piece of Wilder’s aura, but not his ambition.
Now, he’ll face Herndon (24-5, 15 KOs), a 33-year-old Texan who most recently edged Rudy Silvas by split decision in May. While Herndon lacks big-name opponents on his résumé, he brings momentum and nothing to lose — a dangerous combination for a fighter seeking redemption.
