Bam Rodriguez to Face Cafu in Title Unification July 19 in Texas
Pound-for-pound star Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez returns in junior bantamweight showdown against unbeaten Phumelela Cafu
Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez is back—and he’s looking to add another belt to an already growing collection.
The undefeated WBC and Ring Magazine 115-pound champion will take on WBO titleholder Phumelela Cafu in a junior bantamweight unification bout set for Friday, July 19, live on DAZN from the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas.
Rodriguez (21-0, 14 KOs), a slick southpaw from San Antonio, is currently ranked No. 6 on The Ring’s pound-for-pound list. He’s coming off a punishing third-round stoppage of veteran Pedro Guevara last November—his fifth straight win at world level.
Standing across from him will be South Africa’s Phumelela Cafu (11-0-3, 8 KOs), who made headlines last October when he shocked Kosei Tanaka via split decision in Tokyo. The upset earned Cafu the WBO crown and vaulted him to No. 4 in The Ring’s junior bantamweight rankings.
Now, the undefeated pair will square off in what promises to be a high-stakes, high-skill affair.
“Bam is one of the most complete young fighters in the game today,” said one source close to the camp. “But Cafu is awkward, dangerous, and riding the kind of confidence that makes him a live threat.”
Rodriguez had originally targeted a unification with IBF and WBA champion Fernando Martinez, but the Argentine opted for a rematch with Japan’s Kazuto Ioka, leaving Cafu next in line.
At just 25 years old, Rodriguez has already built a résumé that includes wins over Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, Carlos Cuadras, and Sunny Edwards. With a win on July 19, he could set up a three-belt unification by year’s end—if Martinez gets through Ioka again.
Co-Main: Pacheco vs. McCumby in Super Middleweight Clash
Also set for action is unbeaten 168-pound prospect Diego Pacheco (23-0, 18 KOs), who faces veteran Trevor McCumby (28-1, 21 KOs, 1 NC) in the co-main event.
Pacheco, ranked No. 2 at super middleweight by The Ring, continues his rise under the Matchroom banner. McCumby, while unranked, brings experience and power, but enters as the underdog.
The fight card will be streamed globally on DAZN, and takes place at the 12,000-seat facility that doubles as the Dallas Cowboys’ training ground—fitting, given the explosive offense expected in the ring.
